GP Fellowship


The GP Fellowship Scheme’ aims to develop and support early career GPs. The scheme serves the Eastern, Northern, Southern and Western areas which covers all 17 GP Federations and encompass’ a population of approximately 1.8 million patients. Fellowship posts are open to GPs that are 2 years post CCT. It is anticipated the new Fellowship posts will commences on 1st September 2022 on a 12-month Fixed Term Contract. Successful candidates will be able to state their preferred area of work (across the region) and will be accommodated where possible.

The Fellowships are now in their 2nd year of delivery, in 2021, 3 Fellowship posts were offered, it is likely there will be a further 3 posts offered for 2022.

The current Fellowship model (based on 10 sessions per week) offers the opportunity for Fellows to gain experience in the following three areas:-

1. 2 sessions, Development of a specialist interest in the General Practice Elective Care Service Clinics (GPECS)

  • Opportunity to develop specialist skills e.g., Dermatology, MSK, Education etc. including small bursary to support further study.

2. 6 sessions, Clinical Work across a range of practices in a supported role in the Practice Improvement Crisis Response Team (PICR)

  • Guaranteed work arranged by the PICR Team - 6 clinical sessions per week.

3. 2 sessions, Leadership development & Academic study

  • Gain experience in service redesign and implementation, management, and project work.

  • Self-directed learning tailored to salaried GP needs

  • Postgraduate Certificate Course - Strategic Leadership in Primary Care, delivered through QUB

Posts will be advertised on NI JOBFINDER and through Federation contacts in June 2022.
